Lack of vitamin D is a common finding in our population, especially among the elderly. This is due to a combination of decreased intake and absorption, associated with limited exposure to sunlight1. Vitamin D deficiency is also common in other age groups. One study2 with 290 patients hospitalized in a general clinical care showed that vitamin D deficiency occurred in 57% of individuals, 22% of whom had a severe deficit of this substance (<8 ng/dl).
